Whatcom County is currently seeking a Dependency Guardian Ad Litem in the Juvenile Division of Superior Court.

The Guardian Ad Litem job is a key position in the Juvenile Division of Superior Court responsible for representing the best interest of children in dependency proceedings under Title 13 of the Revised Code of Washington; including planning, organizing and facilitating the efforts of diverse individuals, groups and agencies to accomplish the work, mission and goals of the department.

Key duties include:

• Investigating and collecting relevant information about a child’s situation through interviews, observation, and other research.

• Preparing written investigative reports with supporting conclusions and recommendations. Presents the reports, factual information and recommendations including views or positions expressed by a child.

• Monitoring all court orders for compliance and brings to the court’s attention any changes in circumstances that may require a modification of the court order.


Bachelor’s Degree in social work or a related field AND three years progressively responsible experience in the Juvenile Justice System, social services or youth related services. Experience as a Guardian Ad Litem or Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is highly preferred. A Master’s degree in Social Work is desired. Must complete 30 hours of County approved Guardian Ad Litem training within six months of appointment to position. Driving record that meets County standards. Possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire and throughout employment. Must pass job-related tests. Pass polygraph exam. Background check must meet County criteria.
