Job Description About the Position: This is a full-time, 9.3 months (cyclic) permanent position.

There is one position available in the toddler room and one position available in the preschool classroom.

The Viking Union welcomes and engages students, faculty, staff and guests in building a diverse community.  We continually strive to enhance the Western Experience through supporting student leadership, campus involvement and creative expression, and by providing services and events in our venues.  The Child Development Center (CDC) is a service of the Viking Union Organization and provides early learning opportunities for the children of students and staff of the Western Community.  This position is an assistant classroom teacher at the Child Development Center and supports the work of the Early Childhood Specialist 3 who is the lead teacher in the classroom.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Implement Curriculum
    • Work closely with lead teachers to plan and implement curriculum
    • Follow clearly defined word procedures and priorities set for in the Employee Handbook and AS CDC policy handbook
    • Observe, document and interpret children’s work and use the information to work as a team in developing curriculum goals
    • Follow Department of Early Learning and Early Achiever guidelines regarding developmentally appropriate practices with children and families
    • Participate in trainings as required
    • Assist teachers in assessing the progress of each child using TS Gold
  • Prepare Classroom Materials
    • Prepare material for presentation to children under the direction of a teacher or program manager
    • Store and maintain educational equipment and materials
    • Develop visual displays using observations and photos to show children’s learning
  • Ensure Appropriateness of Play and Activities for Children
    • Support lead teacher in directing children in educational activities as well as meal times, free play time, field trips, and transitions between activities and playground times
    • Ensure children are involved in play activities suited to their immediate emotional, social, intellectual, and physical needs
    • Provide activity options to children
    • Supervise or direct student employees in appropriate interactions and activities with support from lead teacher
    • Provide strong classroom management skills
  • Assist with Activity Preparation
    • Assist with preparation, presentation, and cleanup of projects and activities such as art, stories, songs, and outdoor activities
  • Maintain a Healthy and Safe Environment
    • Assist with the maintenance of a healthy and safe environment
    • Administer prescribed medication and first aid; handle medical emergencies as they arise
    • Assist with diapering, and toilet training
    • Follow the state Department of Early Learning’s WACs
  • Create and Maintain Professional Communication with Families
    • Develop positive relationships with children and their families
    • Communicate daily with families; provide updates on child’s day and child development information with knowledge and confidence
  • Participate in Diversity/Cultural Competency Opportunities
    • Actively participate in training or staff development opportunities to support the development of competence and effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural communication, and other related topics
    • Conduct work assignments in support of a positive and inclusive relationship with other diverse staff and students and provide services in a positive and inclusive manner
  • Physical Job Functions
    • Standing – 50 – 75% of the time
    • Walking (on field trips up to 30 minutes)
    • Lifting/carrying
      • 10 – 20 lbs – up to 25% of the time
      • 20 – 30 lbs – occasionally
      • 30 – 40 lbs – seldom
    • Bending/twisting/crouching/kneeling/squatting – to perform duties above
    • Manual dexterity to help with routine tasks and projects; perform computer functions

Other Duties as Assigned

Qualification Required Qualifications:

  • Must meet all Department of Early Learning requirements for teacher and be registered through the MERIT program (www.del.wa.gov/providers-educators)
  • One year of experience in an early childhood program and 30 credit hours in early childhood development/education/special education or equivalent education/experience
  • First Aid/CPR and Blood Borne Pathogens Training and recent TB test, or ability to acquire within 30 days
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a busy and active classroom
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when needed
  • Effective communication skills including written

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent
  • Ability to use technology to create assessments, documentation, and visual displays
  • Demonstrated ability to build professional and supportive relationships with staff

Good communication, observation and documentation skills

Compensation

New hires typically begin at $2544/month including an excellent benefits package
